"Spartan Trails" App Launch: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide for Taygetos and Parnonas

Sparta, March 20, 2025 - In a significant event organized by the Municipality of Sparta and Deputy Mayor Demosthenes Kakouros, the methodology for creating the innovative "Spartan Trails" application was presented. The event took place at the Old City Hall, where "Anavasi" company detailed the standalone application featuring comprehensive hiking maps and suggested routes for the Municipality of Sparta region.

The "Spartan Trails" app will be available for free to all smartphone users with Android and iOS operating systems. The detailed hiking maps are based on "Anavasi's" cartographic database, the official cartographer for mountainous areas, which has been mapping trails in Taygetos since 1999 and Parnonas since 2004.

The maps will provide detailed information, including:

  • 25 suggested hiking routes, featuring detailed descriptions and photos of landscapes and monuments.
  • Central settlements and road networks.
  • Trails organized into 5 categories based on accessibility and difficulty level.
  • Toponymic information.
  • Information for hikers, such as springs, shelters, and kiosks.
  • Features of the countryside, such as chapels and shrines.
  • Elements of folk agricultural heritage, such as threshing floors, stone bridges, and watermills.

The meeting was attended by representatives from Karyes, Vamvakou, and the EOS Sparta, as well as representatives from local media, including LAKONIA TV and IONIA radio.

The Municipality of Sparta, located in the heart of two of Greece's most beautiful mountain ranges, Taygetos and Parnonas, aims to highlight the region's rich history and natural beauty through the "Spartan Trails" app. The area's trails, with ancient carriage roads, Byzantine roads, and sites associated with UNESCO and the E4, offer a unique experience.

The "Spartan Trails" app is expected to promote hiking tourism, enhance visitor safety, and establish the region as a top destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.

The application will be a very important tool for the area, and will also help visitors who have not visited the area before to be able to hike safely in the mountains of Sparta.
